Bungie has hinted recently that there will be a new Halo prequel being released some time soon. (Er, well, next year.) But they've let us know some juicy new details too. The game will be titled Halo: Reach and will likely chronicle the events that took place before the first Halo game, when the Covenant attacked the planet Reach (which was the UNSC's military operations headquarters). The story will probably be based on the novel Halo: The Fall of Reach by Eric Nylund, hinted by the fact that the trailer for Halo: Reach reads: "Halo: Reach falls 2010."
According to Halo legend, the Fall of Reach was a catastrophe for the human race, so it will be interesting to see how it plays out. No doubt Bungie will be sure that it is a game of epic proportions, and it should be made more interesting by the fact that there were many more Spartan II units alive during that time in the story.
Microsoft and Bungie announced that Halo: Reach multiplayer would be included with Halo 3 downloadable content that's going to be released this fall.
