Microsoft and music studio Sumthing Else Music Works excitedly announced today that the original soundtrack for Ensemble Studios' upcoming strategy game Halo Wars will be released on February 17, both in retailers and online at sumthingdigital.com. The soundtrack is composed by Stephen Rippy, who has composed for the Age of Empires series in the past. All three "real" Halo games in the past (that is, duh, Halo 1-3, for those not following the series) have featured music composed by Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori. “For Halo Wars I wanted to write music that fit both the size of the story and its sense of discovery,” said Stephen Rippy. “Each of the various worlds in the game feels a little different; each of the main characters brings something to the mix. More than anything else, it was important that these tracks fit comfortably into the existing Halo universe. I hope they’ll take the listener to some new places as well.”

The release will include the 50-minute-plus soundtrack, along with a bonus DVD featuring 9 additional tracks, 9 tracks from the soundtrack mastered in 5.1, two trailers from the upcoming game, and a behind-the-scenes video.
